On Eagles Wings Again

Last year at this time I reported on a one week cruise with Bennett and our two wives aboard his 40 ketch, On Eagles Wings, in the Virgin Islands. Well a whole year has rolled around but this time the wives were not with us.  The rest of our complement, was Allie and Nick, married friends of Bennett with skills: He is a professional bartender and she a professional chef, and their friend Alex, terrifically inventive and handy, was the fifth person. These fellow crew members are in their 20s and strong, willing, fast learners and good workers.

We had one lay day at Anegada, but otherwise made multiple stops, twelve in six days. (1) Marina Key for fuel. (2) The Baths for swimming and rock scrambling on the beach (you have to swim in or take a cab - no dinks allowed on the beach anymore) The next three photos show the beach we swam to at the north, rocks we scrambled under and the beach at the southern end of the scramble








(3) Spanishtown for groceries and lunch,
Roger, Nick, Bennett and Allie
where Allie was disappointed in her search for fresh fish but did persuade some big dudes with a cooler to give up one of their lobsters, for free --
our desert after the steaks;
Allie is a happy camper, but the lobster is not.
(4) the anchorage on the Southwest side of Prickly Pear Island, a new spot for me, in North Sound, Virgin Gorda, where we had lots of room between our only two neighbors -- a Dutch boat behind us and a French one in front of us.










(5) The anchorage off the beach, west of Pomato Point on the south west coast of Anegada. It is west of the harbor where I had always gone before and open without a marked channel. Here we rented small motor scooters -- top speed 35 mph.
 We visited an unnamed beach on the north side near Lob Lolly where Lene and I had gone, and next day to Cow Wreck Beach, way to the west, a new favorite. We also had a bonfire on the beach near our boat, and finally did score some almost fresh (locally recently frozen) mahi mahi.


(6) Great Harbor on Jost van Dyke for fuel and water and for a five minute tour of Foxys. (7) Diamond Key at the far eastern end of Jost, as my third new place: we dined at Foxys Tabou, a less raucus outpost of the Foxy empire and took a small hike to The Bubble Bath,

where breakers send lots of foam into a small pool formed by boulders in a gap in the cliffy face of the island (Picture to be added). (8) White Bay, also on Jost, where we patronized both the very crowded Soggy Dollar Bar and the quieter Ivans No-Stress Bar, whose tender, Cas, let Nick mix our drinks. Then, after eleven tacks from Jost (via the passage between Great Thatch Key and St. Johns) we came to (9) The Bight in Norman Island where we took our first night-mooring since our starting point in Trellis Bay and dined at the lovely, newly constructed (after the fire) restaurant there.

Next day began with snorkeling, first at the two most popular spots in the BVIs: (10)The Caves and then, nearby (11)  The Indians. 
Our final long reaching passage brought us to (12) Village Key Marina, in Roadtown, Tortola, which is On Eagles Wings home port and from which we departed by ferry the next morning after showers, and sushi at Origins, across from the ferry dock, which was quite good.
     Bennett drove through the passage between Virgin Gorda and Mosquito Island, with a bit of six foot charted depth, which I have never done, and with ILENEs 5 8" draft, I will be unlikely to do. OEWs draft is only 49". But this was a nervous moment though it cut an hour off the trip outside Mosquito Island.
    I did a few boat improvement projects. The first was the repair of the mizzen sail, the smallest and least significant of the three sails of the ketch. It had a tear, about a foot long, parallel and near the seam at the leash (rear side) near the top. Without repair, the tear would have grown larger and larger, especially when sailing close to the wind in strong air. Sail tape alone had been tried and did not hold. I sewed back and forth through the sail tape on both sides ( to hold the two pieces next to each other and the sail itself. For this task I brought my sailors palm, (a leather strap around your hand with the business end of a thimble mounted in the palm. It is needed to apply the brute strength to force the needle through so many plies of tough material. The result does not look pretty (Frankensteins head?)

and the boats owners may elect to have the repair redone professionally with a sewing machine and laying flat rather than standing on the rocking deck and working face high through material that is hanging vertically, but it will hold.  I also placed almost 100 whippings at both ends of the many lines that OEW has. It is true that many of the ends were holding together fairly well through the fusion in high heat of the plastic fibers of which the cores of the lines are made, but whipping adds a smart nautical look and is one of the few skills that I have, so I like to use it.
     A word about our food: OEWs galley stove is an electric range, powered by her electric generator. The generator had gone bad and the owners were contemplating replacing this system with a propane stove. I suggested a much more simple solution, given the infrequency that meals are cooked aboard, consistent with the classic nature of the boat -- a modern low pressure two burner alcohol stove. In the meantime, we made coffee using the electric percolator,

which the main engine could power.



Allie cooked  our eggs, french toast, toast, fish, veggies and steaks on the small barbecue mounted on the stern, powered by small canisters of propane used by campers. Cooking in that condition in the dark was quite a challenge to which Allie rose. Her stove in daylight:

Project on Hold for Summer

We received an email from David Palmer wondering what happened with our projects. Well, summer came along really fast after April 1st. The boats are sitting and waiting for us to pick up our tools again in September when sailboat racing, swimming, golfing, beekeeping, child-rearing, gardening, and goofing-off have slowed somewhat. Although, that child-rearing thing never lets up...

Until then we will continue to sail optis in our dreams.

 Nicholas Hayes book Saving Sailing was a very good read. He also has a web page devoted to the subject. In one of his articles titled, "Opti Haters" he mentions the merits of the Optimists, and he drew some comments, both positive and negative that are interesting to read.

Carrying A Dinghy On A Boat

My situation is a little unique.I am building a boat and a dinghy.Carrying one,however,has presented a challenge because of my boat build.Most boats use a davit system and carry the dinghy on the swim platform or transom.Some carry them on the roof.At first,I thought the roof would be a good place,but as pointed out to me on a forum post,its not.Carrying on the roof can make for a dangerous situation in rough water.Its hard to launch a dinghy while its swinging on a boom or crane.It could crash into the boat and break stuff.It could break loose and hit someone or sink.In an emergency,the boat could sink before getting the dinghy in the water, taking the dinghy down with it.

Most production boats have a lot of freeboard or height of the sides above the water.The boat I am building doesnt have much freeboard at the transom compared to production boats.Because of my boats lower freeboard than most, presents some major challenges for carrying a dinghy.I cant run a full width swim platform because my I/O comes through the transom right in the middle of it.This rules out swim platform dinghy lifts.A transom mount davit could possibly work,but it would be of my own design.Production davits wouldnt be able to lift the dinghy high enough to clear the water or I/O,at least none that I have seen.Then there is the issue of carrying the dinghy across the back.The dinghy will be longer than the boats beam is wide.This could cause problems when in tight marinas or narrow channels.Any of these options would severely limit my rear visibility, thus blocking my transom and preventing my boats name from being visible to other boats.I do plan to tow my dinghy, on the days I plan to use it,if the weather is good.

Some have suggested that I go with an inflatable or folding Porta boat.Ive had issues with inflatables in the past and they are heavy for their size.Some folding boats are a little to flimsy to really carry any weight.I need to be able to carry roughly 800 to 1000 pounds.I dont think its possible,so two trips to shore will be required.Maybe I could pull a ski tube behind the dinghy with our supplies in it.Wait,I know!Ill toss the kids in the ski tube and put our provisions in the boat.They will love that.

My hull draft will only be 16 to 18 inches,so I could possibly drop anchor and wade to shore.Im not sure how my significant other and our kids will like that.Got to keep Mama happy,LOL.When I am in a marina,I will more than likely moor the boat, while we go ashore for provisions.If the area will allow for it,I could beach the bow and let everyone off ,moor the boat,and take the dinghy back to meet the family.When we return,I could take the dinghy back to the boat,bring the boat back to shore,and load up.Seems like to much work.Some places will allow boats to temporarily dock for a quick trip to town for supplies.that would be the ultimate solution.

I still have a while to go before I make a final decision on how to carry a dinghy.Until then,I will be looking and watching other boats and how they carry a dinghy.Im always open to suggestions.


UPDATE!
After some discussion on the Trawler Forum,I am considering adding a rear rack to carry my dinghy and to hang the rear canvas enclosure from.I feel that this rack needs to be removable.I only plan to carry the dinghy when I do the Great Loop Cruise.Every where else I will be able to dock or trailer the boat out.Here is what I had in mind for those that are scratching their heads trying to figure out what I am rambling on about.

Boatbuilding More Progress by John Z on his Classic Moth

In the ongoing coverage of John Zs Classic Moth build, last week I stopped over at his shop to gauge his progress and have a beer. The Classic Moth modified Mistral design is now upside down awaiting gunwhales and a layer of 4 oz. glass over the bottom.

This photo, though perhaps a tad distorted, shows how deeply Veed the Mistral design sections are around the midships.

From the previous photo, you can see that John has some interesting stuff hanging from his walls. This is the box containing his F1 rubber-band indoor airplanes. These are extremely finicky to make, with a minimum weight of one gram. John has all the various tools to test balsa density and strength; tools to strip balsa into extremely narrow widths; tools to check rubber band elasticity; molds to make the tricky propellers, and the various techniques to apply the ultra-thin microfilm covering.  To make a F1 takes a methodical, painstaking craftsman.


John also has two half models of the Americas Cup, IACC keelboats, the class that precedes the current foiling catamarans. Surprisingly, it was through his wifes connections and not his Naval Architect circle of friends that these two half-models now grace his shop.

Wing Flapping on a Magnum Narrow Skiff Moth

I have owned several Classic Moths, a scow Moth, and yes, even a narrow skiff Moth. The narrow skiff Moth was a Magnum 2 built by John Claridge and originally sailed at the 1976 Moth Worlds by the builder. The Worlds were held at Ware River, Virginia and John sold the Magnum to one of the local Moth sailors after the regatta. I rescued the Magnum from the Old Dominion University boat house in Norfolk sometime in the mid 80s and getting it back on the water became a joint project with Bill Beaver. By the time we finally got sailing, it became obvious the very lightweight hull of  the Magnum 2 was creaky and leaky. I never did fully trust hiking off the wings. I think we eventually gave the Moth away. Bill Beaver went on to build two more narrow beam Moths to his own design and then did his own foiler project. I, on the other hand, migrated to the more sedate side of  Mothing with a scow and then eventually the Classic versions.

I wrote this short piece, about my first sailing experience in the Magnum 2, for an Australian Moth newsletter. It still cracks me up whenever I read it.


November 1987 - SSA Closing Day

Last fall (November 1987) I threw my Magnum 2 together for the first time in order to make the end-of-year handicap race at Severn Sailing Association. I was tying the last pieces on at the last minute (those who know me can picture the rigging job!) and I just barely made it to the start but to no avail. There was no wind and, at the end of the day, I felt like I had tried riding an unicycle.
After starting with the Snipes, Daysailors and Lasers, I moved forward in the Moth to reduce wetted surface and this set up a chain reaction not unlike the swinging pendulum of a clock, though with a much faster period of movement. First the leeward wing dipped into the water as a small ripple of a wave sent the Moth lurching. To counteract, I moved my torso slowly to weather, cognizant that this was a tender craft - little did I know how tender! Immediately the Moth lurched the other way , dipping the weather wing in the water. I reacted by adjusting my weight with even more care but the Moth seemed to consider that, even this deliberate movement, was much-too-much and flopped back, dipping the leeward wing in the water. This was repeated several times and, with all this awkward flapping of wings, my amused fellow competitors thought that this aquatic Moth was attempting to take flight. In desperation I moved to the stern where there was more boat and things settled out.
Phew! Now I had time to look around and it wasnt pretty. Ultralight dinghies possess no momentum and, in a glassy calm and, with every passing motor boat wake, the Moth would slowly be pushed backward. What looked to be my competitors amazing speed away from me was, instead, my amazing speed backwards.
To compound this comedy my cockpit had filled with water (remember this is a twelve-year old Magnum 2 and at the time it did not have a full double bottom - it does now!) The episode of wing flapping had alternatively scooped water on the wing covers that then ran down to the deck of the Moth and filled the center cockpit well.
I hadnt realized that there were two small drain holes from the center well to the forward double bottom; hence there were no plugs in them and I was SINKING! Not to worry. I had made, at the most, 100 yards from the clubhouse docks, of which 50 had been lost in a magnificent display of wing -flapping and reverse sailing. The remaining 50 yards to safety was made by sculling and hand paddling.

He is past president of the Gold Coast CPCU Society as well as the
past president of the Fort Lauderdale Mariners Club. Art is an
approved instructor by the Florida Department of Financial Services
for Inland Marine and Marine Insurance. He taught Marine Insurance
as an adjunct instructor at Broward Community College.
Art has been a speaker at the Metal Boat Society Festival, and Fort
Lauderdale Mariners Club Marine Insurance Seminar. As a member
of the USAF he served as a loadmaster and retired with the rank of
CMSgt. Art owns an Alan Pape designed steel cutter. He has helped
in the delivery of sailboats from the Chesapeake, Bahamas and the

John Simpson has been involved with boats since childhood and this
evolved into a successful career in naval architecture and boat
design. This path has been the long but thorough route – 4 years of
shipyard & technical training, several years of working with other
naval architectures, 3 years with a boat builder doing purchasing,
estimating, mould tooling, outfitting, engine installation, sea trials and
even some design work.

In 1978 John opened his own design office and over the following
years has done over 100 designs for power, sail, pleasure,
commercial and military vessels in a variety of materials for both
domestic and foreign clients. In 1980 he won the Cruising world
magazine’s Design Award for his 42’ cutter ‘Fidelity’. This was a
forerunner of ‘Perelanda” a 43’ round bilge steel sailboat as featured
in the book Steel Away and owned/built by authors LeCain Smith and
Sheila Moir, 2 of the founders of the Metal Boat Society. John was the
2010 Metal Boat Festival’s Designer of the Year and has been a
stalwart supporter of the MBS for many years.

Peter McGonagle grew up sailing in Rhode Island, but has lived and
worked in Seattle, Washington for the last ten years. In 2002 he
started Swiftsure Yachts with two partners. He is a Certified
Professional Yacht Broker and am a licensed Florida yacht broker. He
and his family moved aboard the S/V Charlotte in August of 2007 to
explore the cruising life for a few years, and in July of 2009 I
completed a two year Caribbean cruise with my family aboard
“Charlotte,” a 1991 Robert Perry-designed 51? steel sloop. We’re now
back in Seattle .

Boatbuilding Update on the Nantais Classic Moth

David Simms of British Columbia, Canada, sends along an update on his build of the French Moth Classique Nantais design. My first post on Daves boatbuilding can be found here.

"Ive attached a couple of pictures of the Nantais, in its present state... All of the frames are made of laminated 1 cm x 1 cm, straight-grained Douglas Fir. Im amazed at how light, and STRONG, they are. Presently, the fairing has been nearly completed and the frames have been sealed with epoxy. There are fewer than a dozen screws in all of the deck framing. I have rough cut the plywood for the deck and Ive also sealed the inside face of the decking with epoxy. 
[Second picture] A bit of humour, here. Im struggling to move the boat into one of my sheds, for winter storage. This little struggle has convinced me that my original thoughts of building a boat that could be transported on top of a car were somewhat unrealistic. Given that Im not related to Charles Atlas, Ill soon be looking for a trailer."

Deciding On A Boat To Build

I finally narrowed down my boat search.I have been tormenting myself with buying or building.After doing the math,I have come to the conclusion that I can build a new boat cheaper and better than buying a used turn key boat.Most of the turn key boats I looked at really needed work.Fiberglass boats are the worst.Most have water logged flotation foam that causes the wood stringers and transom to rot from the bottom up.Ive stripped (and helped strip) and rebuilt a few boats.It is not fun in a big 25+ foot boat.Its faster and easier to start from scratch.

 Most of my boating will be on larger lakes and the ICW around South Carolina,North Carolina,and Georgia.I do plan to take the boat around the Great Loop,so it must be a sea worthy design.I searched for years for a design that was easy for a first time builder with some basic carpentry and boat building skills.There are a lot of excellent boat designers with plans out.Most are more suited to the advanced DIY builder than a first timer with basic skills.Out of all the producers of plans,I decided on Spira International.Jeff Spira is the designer of all the plans.The best thing about his plans,is access to Jeff Spira himself.He can be contacted through his website or on facebook.He always gets back in contact with you within time.He is a busy man tho.So please give him a few days,he could be away.

 My base criteria for a boat is as follows in this order.There are more variables,but these are the main ones.
1)Trailerable behind a full size pick up truck,van,or class C RV.
2)Shallow draft, 12 to 16 inches with the lower unit up.
3)Absolutely no more than 2 gallon per hour fuel burn at displacement speed.
4)Must have sleeping arrangements for four.
5)Must have full head with shower.

Working on a July Launch Date for the Optimist

My brothers and I have slowed our building of the Optimist down to a crawl. However, my brother Darren has taken the lead and wants the first boat to launch on July 4th.

He has purchased sail, tiller and extension, blades (rudder, centerboard), gudgeons from APS - Annapolis Performance Sailing.

To protect the chine he has laid down a 2 inch strip of fiberglass cloth in simple-clear polyester resin. It should provide a bit of resistance to any "hard blows" on rocks that make up the shore of our part of Lake Ontario.

Polyester resin is quick to harden and very easy to sand. It costs about half the price of shipping epoxy to us. Its just a short drive to the auto parts to pick up a quart.

Header Photo Blue Jay on Megunticook Lake Maine




The previous header photo was of a Blue Jay drifting during the 2014 "Pollys Folly" regatta on Lake Megunticook, Maine. Two of the "Free-for-Alls" that I listed were cancelled this year; Pollys Folly because of a conflict with a Laser regatta, and the MASCF at the Chesapeake Maritime Museum because of Hurricane Joaquin lurking offshore during the first weekend in October.

The Archipelago Rally went off without a hitch with over 40 extremely diverse small boats. Fellow sailing blogger, Tillerman, almost won this years Rally in his RS Aero. The Sebago Cup was mostly an event for the local Sebago Canoe Clubs Laser and Sunfish fleet. The 2015 NSHOF Classic Wooden Sailboat Rendezvous had only one dinghy registered this year. There was, however, a large fleet of restored Stars. My friend, Tom Price, had his 1959 Lippincott racing and sent along this report.
"We launched at AYC on Saturday but it was too rough in the City Dock basin for us so we hauled out again. On Sunday we relaunched and raced. It was a very nice day contrary to predictions, never getting over 15. "Conflict" (and John Sherwood - both classics) did well despite using our 1963 sails (because of their cool yellow color). Keith Donald won with his fully modern wood Star and we were second beating Elliott and # 177 "Trout". Nothing broke and we felt quite comfortable. I did the clinging vine style hiking and it suited the placement of cleats and winch perfectly. It was all reaching so the Stars didnt shine overall ( we were the last start ) but it was a real blast.
